East Africa is Njoro Canning Factory's original export region, built on decades of cross-border trade relationships across Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan. As a member of the East African Community (EAC), Kenya shares a common market framework with Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi that simplifies cross-border trade in food products compared with more distant markets.
Because these markets are road-accessible from our Njoro facility rather than requiring sea freight, East Africa is typically our fastest-turnaround export region — distributors can receive canned and dehydrated goods within a week of order confirmation, and it is the region where we most often support smaller, more frequent order volumes for regional wholesalers.
Our highest-volume East African export — garden peas, githeri, mixed vegetables and beans in tomato sauce travel well by road and are widely stocked by regional wholesalers.
Supplied to cold-chain distributors in Kampala, Dar es Salaam and Kigali; requires refrigerated transport arrangement confirmed at order stage.
Cornflour, custard powder and glucose syrup — long shelf life makes this category well suited to overland transit times.
KOL spices and masalas are established sellers with East African diaspora and local retail customers who already recognise the brand.
As EAC Partner States, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi apply the EAC Common External Tariff and simplified certificate of origin procedures for goods manufactured within the bloc, which reduces documentation overhead compared with non-EAC destinations. Import permits and phytosanitary/food safety clearance are still required and are arranged per shipment through each destination's food and standards authority (e.g. Uganda National Bureau of Standards, Tanzania Bureau of Standards, Rwanda Standards Board).
South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo are not EAC Partner States in the same tariff regime as of this writing for DRC (DRC's EAC accession is still being phased in for trade purposes), so import permits and standard customs duties apply; we advise partners in these two markets early on required import licensing, as processing times can run longer than for Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda or Burundi.
All shipments travel with our FSSC 22000 and KEBS certification documentation, plus a certificate of origin and phytosanitary certificate for vegetable-based products.

Because East Africa is road-reachable, shipments move by truck directly from Njoro rather than through Mombasa port, which keeps both cost and lead time down relative to our sea-freight regions. Typical transit is 3–5 days to Kampala or Kigali, and 5–10 days to more distant points such as Bujumbura, Juba or eastern DRC, depending on border congestion.
We work with established freight forwarders experienced in EAC cross-border documentation to minimise delays at Malaba, Busia, Namanga and Isebania. For South Sudan and DRC shipments, we recommend confirming import licensing before dispatch, as these routes carry more variable clearance times.
