The Horn of Africa region — Ethiopia and Djibouti — is a distinct market from our other African export destinations, both commercially and logistically. Ethiopia has one of the largest populations in Africa and a fast-growing packaged food retail sector concentrated in Addis Ababa and other major cities, while Djibouti's role is different again: a small domestic population but an outsized position as a regional port and transshipment hub, meaning stock landed there can move onward across the wider Horn and into landlocked Ethiopia.
We ship to this region via two distinct routes depending on the customer: direct overland to Ethiopia through the Moyale border crossing, or via sea freight into Djibouti port for onward distribution.
Shelf-stable canned vegetables are well suited to Ethiopia's retail distribution networks outside major cities where cold chain is limited.

Ethiopia requires an import permit issued through Ethiopia's food and drug regulatory authority, and — because Ethiopia operates foreign exchange controls — import transactions typically require the buyer to secure forex allocation or use a letter of credit; we advise confirming this on the buyer's side before committing to shipment timelines, as forex approval is usually the longest step in the process, not customs clearance itself.
Djibouti operates as a free port with comparatively streamlined import procedures, since much of what lands there is destined for onward re-export rather than domestic consumption — this makes it a practical landing point for shipments ultimately destined for inland Ethiopian or wider Horn markets where direct overland delivery is impractical.
All shipments to this region travel with FSSC 22000 certification, KEBS export documentation, and a certificate of origin; halal documentation is available on request and is commonly required by buyers in both markets given the predominantly Muslim consumer base in parts of the region.

For Ethiopian buyers, overland delivery via the Moyale border crossing is often faster door-to-door than sea freight through Djibouti, though it depends on the buyer's location — Addis Ababa-based importers sometimes prefer Djibouti port given Ethiopia's reliance on Djibouti for the bulk of its sea trade. We agree the route with each buyer at order stage.
The single biggest variable in Horn of Africa lead times is not transport but Ethiopian import/forex approval on the buyer's side — we recommend buyers begin that process before placing the order to avoid stock sitting in transit or storage awaiting clearance.
